What a fun story! A big thanks to Lydia and her mom Heather for asking for it! You wanted a spooky berestain bears story, and this one was for you.
It is a bittersweet time of year – it’s the end of summer which means some kids, like my own 3, are going back to school. It’s going to be sad not having them around the house all day, but, it also means that Fall is coming! And Fall is my favorite season. I like watching the trees change color and I like that we’re going to get a break from the heat for a while. I also very much enjoy Halloween and hearing spooky stories just like this one. So I think this is a good transition into the Fall season here with lots of fun holidays to look forward to.
But, back to the story – so being afraid of the dark is very normal. Just like Papa Bear said, everyone is afraid of the dark sometimes. You can’t see things clearly, and your mind makes up stories about the stuff you can’t see. Those stories are probably a little scary, but it’s just your brain’s way of trying to protect you. The good news is that there are no monsters, especially in our houses. This is why we have doors and locks, to keep things out of our houses.
So rest assured, you are safe in your bed. Now I do want to share something I taught myself when I was little. I realized, that if I can’t see well in the dark, then other things probably can’t see well in the dark either. So the darkness is sort of like a little protective blanket. It keeps me hidden, and that idea made me feel a lot more comfortable about being in the dark.
So the next time you find yourself in the dark, remember my trick and tell your imagination to stop thinking about scary things. You can use your imagination to make up a story about funny things instead, because I know you are smart and brave.
Thanks for listening, and I’ll see you again next time.
